Mpox is endemic in parts of West and Central Africa, with increasing cases over the decades, and caused a global epidemic in 2022 affecting Europe, Australia, the US, and other regions. The Central African Republic has recently declared an outbreak of mpox, with infections now reaching the capital, Bangui, according to the Health Ministry. Initially confined to rural areas, the disease's spread to urban centers has heightened concerns, particularly as the stigma associated with Mpox has led some families to conceal infected relatives, increasing the risk of transmission. Mpox has also been reported in Rwanda and Burundi, and a new strain is spreading in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). In Bangui, a densely populated area, the risk of person-to-person transmission is very high. Kenya has also detected its first case of mpox, which was identified in a passenger traveling from Uganda to Rwanda through Kenya.
